Blog Tour: |Review| Knee Deep by Jolene B. Perry

I'm participating in the Knee Deep by Jolene B. Perry book blog tour and I just have to say oh WOW. This book just broke me into pieces and put me back together. My feelings for it just cannot be put into words or expressed coherently and I try my best to capture how much Knee Deep has left a mark on me, but I know I fail. But I must say and I hope if you're reading this you can understand that this is a very, very moving and well written novel that I think everyone should give a chance.

Title: Knee Deep
Author: Jolene B. Perry
Published May 1st 2012 by Tribute Books
Genre: YA realistic contemporary, romance
Rating:
Knee Deep
Goodread's summary:
Shawn is the guy Ronnie Bird promised her life to at the age of fourteen. He's her soul mate. He's more uptight every day, but it's not his fault. His family life is stressful, and she's adding to it. She just needs to be more understanding, and he'll start to be the boy she fell in love with. She won’t give up on someone she’s loved for so long.

Luke is her best friend, and the guy she hangs with to watch girlie movies in her large blanketopias. He's the guy she can confide in before she even goes to her girlfriends, and the guy who she's playing opposite in Romeo and Juliet. Now her chest flutters every time he gets too close. This is new. Is Ronnie falling for him? Or is Juliet? The lines are getting blurry, but leaving one guy for another is not something that a girl like Ronnie does.

Shawn’s outbursts are starting to give her bruises, and Luke’s heart breaks as Ronnie remains torn. While her thoughts and feelings swirl around the lines between friendship and forever, she’s about to lose them both.
Racquel's thoughts:
Reading Knee Deep is like watching a train wreck in extreme slow motion. From the summary of the book you know disaster will happen and knowing from page one that it was coming just broke me. The entire time I was reading Knee Deep there was literally a weight in my heart that was pulling it down and so many times I had to put my Kindle down and just take a breath because my chest was physically hurting. But each time I picked my Kindle up again, it got worse, the train was approaching the wreck part and it just... hurt. But I just could not turn away from the crash. Or the aftermath.

In Knee Deep, Jolene B. Perry tackles the subject of an abusive relationship (don't worry, this is not a spoiler, you know there is an abusive relationship form the book summary) and I think she handled it beyond well. I was never in abusive relationship and I hope I never will be but I've stood by a very close friend who has been an abusive relationship and I think Perry handled the subject very realistically, it was liking living through what my friend went through once again. Ronnie, the main character, is with Shawn who she believes is her soul mate and even though Shawn is changing from the sweet guy she knows, she's sticking with him. No mater how much it mentally and psychically hurts. Ronnie's reaction to everything happening and even everybody's reaction around her is spot on accurate just like like with everything else with the book like the character's voices.

What made Knee Deep such a powerful novel, I believe is the fact that it wasn't overly dramatic. Bad things happened subtly but they kept piling up until I couldn't handle it anymore and I just wanted to scream at how unfair everything is. Another thing is often between chapters, we got flashbacks of Ronnie and Shawn. Shawn as a sweetheart and caring person. Shawn as a good person. So seeing him transform throughout the book was so heartbreaking and made everything worse for me. Since Shawn ran hot and cold, we got to see a sincerely good, teenage boy side of him and that made his ugly side even more... personal and hurtful since I knew he had goodness in him.

Which leads me to say that Shawn is my favorite character or better yet, the character I'm most interested in. Seeing him transform into a... monster is what ruined me the most and I just cannot stop thinking about is there room for redemption for him? Will he become a bigger abuser or will he turn his life around? Was he that effected by the bad things?

As you can see, I'm highly moved by Knee Deep. All the characters and situations felt real to me and I'm a little attached and it's definitely a book that will stay with me for a long time because even though it showed an ugly truth, a terrible, terrible truth, it also showed the light at the end of the tunnel. Hope. I would love to reread the book again, but it will extremely hard. Ronnie is a sweet girl that deserved none of the bad stuff that happened to her. Shawn transformation was heartbreaking but no matter how bad everything got, Luke and Mindy, Ronnie's best friends, were her lifeline of hope. Ronnie's dad presence in the book was great and I appreciated his important role. Also, Ronnie is participating in her school production of Romeo and Juliet and I found that a really nice addition to the story with how it was written and woven into the plot.

Another thing worth mentioning is how I really, really, really loved how the title, Knee Deep, was actually significant to the book. You're going to have to read to find out ;D

Knee Deep is not an 'good' novel. It is not an enjoyable one either. It's a novel that will deliver punch after punch and will keep you up at night and it will crush and hurt your heart but it was completely worth reading. If you don't like books that deal with hard stuff then Knee Deep isn't for you but if you want a book to evoke every emotion from you, to completely exhaust you and wear you out then put you back together, then Knee Deep went above an beyond. Despite it being extremely heartbreaking, Knee Deep, still managed to make me laugh a few times and the end was satisfying. I highly, highly suggest Knee Deep to everyone because it deals with a difficult subject and it deals with it perfectly. Jolene B. Perry wowed me.

Rating: 5 extremely heartbroken hearts~ this such a well written book that I absolutely loved. In a different kind of love but it was soooo worth reading and I cannot stress how good it is.

First:
Guilt pricks at my chest as I lie in bed and listen for Shawn's motorcycle.

Blog Tour: Night Sky by Jolene B. Perry

For today's stop for the Night Sky by Jolene B. Perry, I have a blog post from Jolene!
Some of my all-time favorite YA reads EVER.
  • Grounding Quinn by Stephanie Campbell - yes, she's a friend of mine, BUT we didn't become friends until I read this totally awesome book. We're doing a collaboration together, and I'm thrilled to work with her.
  • The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson - I'm actually planning a re-read of this book shortly. I've gone back and just read the poems MANY times. It's a beautiful story with quirky characters, and I just LOVE it.
  • Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi- Not only did I love the language (and it's not at all how I write) but I loved that I never knew what would happen next . . .

SO! I have a million more books that I could put on this list, but these I'd recommend to just about anyone.

Thanks for having me here today!!

~ Jolene

Girl I’ve loved, girl I’m falling for. Now that they’re both in view, the problem is clear.

After losing Sarah, the friend he’s loved, to some other guy, Jameson meets Sky. Her Native American roots, fluid movements, and need for brutal honesty become addictive fast. This is good. Jameson needs distraction – his dad leaves for another woman, his mom’s walking around like a zombie, and Sarah’s new boyfriend can’t keep his hands off of her.

As he spends time with Sky and learns about her village, her totems, and her friends with drums - she's way more than distraction. Jameson's falling for her fast.

But Sky’s need for honesty somehow doesn’t extend to her life story – and Jameson just may need more than his new girl to keep him distracted from the disaster of his senior year.

Emma's thoughts:

I really, really, really love reading books from male POV's. And heellooo Jameson! Why do you not exist? Reading from Jay's perspective was utterly enthralling! If you're like me and get constantly aggravated and confused by boys and their incomprehensible decisions, read this! Although Jameson isn't like that. He's decent, more than that, he's genuine. Damn Sarah for being so blind. Damn Sky for being so lucky.

Night Sky starts off typically. He's in love with his best friend, she gets with another guy, he's depressed, blah blah blah. But when you meet Sky, it's like wooah. Take a step back ladies and gentlemen! Her personality oozes confidence and beauty. I don't blame Jay for liking her at all. People are drawn to confidence and Sky is the damn epitome of it. 'Are you gonna drive me to your house, offer me a Pepsi and get me into your pool?' Um, what guy isn't going to say yes to that?

Their relationship is quirky and hot. They depend on each other's honesty, they tell the truth. I love the way Jolene Perry wrote this. Jameson's drawn to the honesty, he begins to love it, crave it. Watching his character change and develop throughout the story is a touching journey.

I truly enjoyed how realistic yet surprising Night Sky. There are twists that you would never imagine happening in a million years, but Perry makes it real. His emotions are real, his feelings, the things that he does. I could see it playing out in my mind, the way that Jameson reacted to situations. It never felt forced or unbelievable. I admire Jolene Perry for writing so beautiful from a guy's perspective.

Rating: 4 stars~ I just couldn't get enough of Jameson♥

Review + Giveaway: The Next Door Boys by Jolene B. Perry

The Next Door Boys
Goodreads summary:
With her body still recovering from last year's cancer treatments, Leigh Tressman is determined to be independent. Despite the interference from her overprotective brother, physical frustrations, and spiritual dilemmas— not to mention the ever expanding line of young men ready to fall in love with her— Leigh discovers what it actually means to stand on her own and learns that love can be found in unexpected but delightful places.
Racquel's thoughts:
With the Plague of Paranormal, every time I come across a YA contemporary book fireworks of happiness go off and fireworks definitely erupted when I came across The Next Door Boys for the first time and can you just imagine how I felt when I saw this on netgalley, requested and got it accepted. It was a complete squeal fest and phew, thank god I wasn't disappointed!

To be honest I picked this up and one chapter into it, I put it down. I had no idea that it wasn't going to shy away from religion and I was a little scared that the further I read on, the more it was going to turn into a Christian read only. It's nice to see writers not shy away from religion but I don't want to read only about it, I'm not even Christian but later that day I decided was going to suck it up like a big girl and keep going. I can't judge a book by one chapter only and again, phew, I'm glad I didn't!

Sure religion drives the plot of the book to a certain extent but I found myself not minding at all and I can't imagine the book without it! It actually added charm to the book and it wasn't that thick of factor in the book so worry not, even if you don't like reading about religion in books I'm sure it won't bother you in The Next Door Boys.

I'm going to get this out of the way first since I seem to be singing praises so far, why did I give the book 3 hearts only if I liked it so much? Well I didn't like how Leigh judged everybody. She judged Brian at sight, she judged Kim (her roommate) on sight and she judged Meghan's (her other roommate) sister after one second in their presence. It seemed to me that quiet & nice = down to earth and amazing while loud & boy crazy = not so great of a person.

Also the fall of Noah's and Leigh relationship bother me. To be honest Perry built Noah too perfectly and it was completely out of character to do what he did at the end, I couldn't believe that sweet person at the beginning could something like that! I wish there was another way around their break up and it's the same thing with the judging here, I got the vibe that just because Noah was ambitious about his acting career that turned him into an ugly person. Fame = not a good thing. When in reality Noah was just trying to reach his goals! Just because Leigh might have not really found them great doesn't mean they're bad.

Complaints aside, I really did enjoy this book to extremes♥ I loved how Leigh had hobbies like sewing and I liked to see her grow more independent. I loved the relationship between Jaron and Leigh and Brian and Leigh. For once, an author took the time to actually DEVELOP a romantic relationship!! It made me so happy((': Brian and Leigh's relationship is probably one of my favorite romantic relationships of all time! I wish we had an epilogue though, I felt the book ended too abruptly. I was not ready to leave the characters! I will say though,  I will definitely be looking forward to Perry's book and I almost died from happiness when I found out there will be TWO more books added to The Next Door Boys!!

If you have not added The Next Door Boys to your to-be-read pile, YOU ARE MISSING OUT! A great debut by Perry, this is a must read for contemporary fans!

My Rating: 3 hearts~ very good, I enjoyed it immensely!

The Next Door Boys

With her body still recovering from last year's cancer treatments, Leigh Tressman is determined to be independent. Despite the interference from her overprotective brother, the ever-expanding line of young men ready to fall in love with her--not to mention the physical frustrations and spiritual dilemmas Leigh discovers what it actually means to stand on her own and learns that love can be found in unexpected but comfortable places.

Why is this m WoW? well, I haven't read a book quite like this before. The only cancer books I read were Before I Die (do I need to point out what happens in this one?) and It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life by Lance Armstrong because I had an assignment on it. But I have never read anything post-cancer and how life is after it. Always the during. Besides that, this sounds like it will be a great contemporary, I like the "over-protective brother" line in the summary, I LOVE over protective brothers (when they are not mine that is;D) and "expanding line of young men ready to fall in love with her" does this indicate romance? It goes with out saying this is a WoW!
