The Rules of Scoundrels #2
Goodreads summary:
Lady Philippa Marbury is odd. The bespectacled, brilliant fourth daughter of the Marquess of Needham and Dolby cares more for books than balls, flora than fashion and science than the season. Nearly engaged to Lord Castleton, Pippa wants to explore the scandalous parts of London she's never seen before marriage. And she knows just who to ask: the tall, charming, quick-witted bookkeeper of The Fallen Angel, London's most notorious and coveted gaming hell, known only as Cross.
Like any good scientist, Pippa's done her research and Cross's reputation makes him perfect for her scheme. She wants science without emotion—the experience of ruination without the repercussions of ruination. And who better to provide her with the experience than this legendary man? But when this odd, unexpected female propositions Cross, it's more than tempting . . . and it will take everything he has to resist following his instincts—and giving the lady precisely what she wants.
What happened: So. This is going to be blasphemous BUT, Sarah MacLean has been a fail for me. I tolerated . I skimmed and I didn't finish . I know MacLean is historical romance royalty and even non-historical romance readers love her but I just have NOT enjoyed her stories at all.

This book was a FOURTH chance because... Sharon texted me and told me she was reading One Good Earl Deserves a Lover and it had a slow burn romance and I was SOLD. I trust Sharon and I love slow burn and since I already had an e-ARC collecting dust, why not give Sarah MacLean ANOTHER chance.

Second chance thoughts: I'm happy to report back that I REALLY liked One Good Earl Deserves a Lover! I'm glad Sharon made me read it because I've FINALLY found a Sarah MacLean book that I like. One Good Earl Deserves a Lover was a fun, fun read. I couldn't stop laughing the first 1/3 of the book because the heroine, Pippa, went around hypothesizing about things. Pippa was just great. She's super smart and interested in all subjects, mathematics, astronomy, and even seduction. She was deemed odd because ladies of that time weren't supposed to show a great interest in learning. As I told Sharon, Pippa might have been "odd" but she wasn't ridiculously quirky and completely and annoyingly different. The plot might have been a bit ridiculous but I really enjoyed it! It was a great set up that offered a lot of laughs. The hero, Cross, was quite swoony up until he become cheesy which is why I enjoyed this book, but didn't love it. I like Cross but all his "sin" and "dark side" talk got really eye roll-y. Just get over yourself already! Despite that though, I also loved the side characters, Bourne, Temple & Chase who are Cross's buisness partners. Even Castleton! Can Castelton have his own book, please? Beta hero FTW! And I abosultely can NOT wait for the next book, , which is Temple's book and I REALLY REALLY want it to be another MacLean HIT for me.

Laugh out loud quote:
"I am happy to pay you," she announced. "For your services."

A Harsh, strangled sound cut through the room. It came from him. "Pay me."

She nodded. "would, say, twenty-five pounds do?"

"No."

Her brows knit together. "Of course, a person of your--prowess--is worth more. I apologize for the offense. Fifty? I'm afraid I can't go much higher. It's quite a bit of money."
Verdict: [C+ rating ] I've FINALLY found a Sarah MacLean book to enjoy. It was funny, sexy and full of great characters.

Second Chance Saturday (04): Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks

Second Chance Saturday
The goal of Second Chance Saturday is to give a second chance to a book/author/series we've written off for some reason.

This Month's Featured Book: Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks

This Book Was a Second Chance Because... I've read a couple Maya Banks books before, and I was not particularly impressed. Also, the summary made this book sound ridiculous, and I wrote it off immediately. Racquel talked me into giving it a chance.

Verdict: Worth the second chance! Never Seduce a Scot featured likable a hero and heroine and a really sweet romance! Despite a few unrealistic elements, it actually dealt with the heroine's deafness a lot more realistically than some I've read before. It also had one of the best love confession scenes I've read in a long time. Overall, it was very enjoyable, and I definitely plan to look out for the next books in the series. I really hope Banks writes Graeme's sister's book, because I liked her a lot.

Other Books Mentioned: Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale

Spindle Cove #1
Goodreads summary:
Welcome to Spindle Cove, where the ladies with delicate constitutions come for the sea air, and men in their prime are... nowhere to be found. Or are they?

Spindle Cove is the destination of choice for certain types of well-bred young ladies: the painfully shy, young wives disenchanted with matrimony, and young girls too enchanted with the wrong men; it is a haven for those who live there.

Victor Bramwell, the new Earl of Rycliff, knows he doesn't belong here. So far as he can tell, there's nothing in this place but spinsters... and sheep. But he has no choice, he has orders to gather a militia. It's a simple mission, made complicated by the spirited, exquisite Susanna Finch—a woman who is determined to save her personal utopia from the invasion of Bram's makeshift army.

Susanna has no use for aggravating men; Bram has sworn off interfering women. The scene is set for an epic battle... but who can be named the winner when both have so much to lose?
What happened: I bought ready to love it but I quit at the 22% mark. The story and main characters were not clicking with me.

This book was a second chance because... Tessa Dare is historical romance favorite for both romance and non romance reader. I did not want to be the one person who's left out of the reading fun.

Second chance thoughts: sad to say, but this is one time that giving a book a second chance did not transform it to a favorite. I ended up enjoying somewhat but in end, all I can give it is a D+ rating. The reason I put it down the first time was because it was full of "let me unleash your pleasure" talk which ALWAYS makes me roll my eyes. Plus it was immediate which was something I'm sick of. Give me the slow burn!!!!!! I really just didn't enjoy the romance at all.  The hero, Bram, could think of nothing but being with the heroine *eye roll* and the heroine was just saint like. No one can get things done like her. Anyone in town needs help? They go to Susanna. No one can solves their own problems. Susanna had to solve those problems because Susanna is perfect. Yeah, that didn't work for me. Susanna pretty much wanted everyone in town to do what she said and operate under her rule. And the last straw was when someone is wounded and in a fatal situation, Susanna and Bram somehow turn the conversation about themselves when they were supposed to be discussing getting aide for the person who's hurt. That pretty much killed everything for me.
Lastly, both Bram and Susanna have been through tragedies and I felt this was a cheap ploy to add angst. I really did not care a single bit about how both of them overcame their respective tragedies because I could see the author pulling the puppet strings.

However I did laugh out loud a few times and  I was getting crazy looks from people because I couldn't stop smiling at parts. But those part usually involved Colin, Bram's cousin & the hero of the next book and the only scene I truly loved was between Colin and Minerva, who's Colin's heroine in the next book .

Worthy-of-sharing quote:
"We are men. Last I checked, anyhow."
"It's not just a matter of having the proper equipment. It's using the equipment properly."
Verdict: [D+ rating ] not much better than my first try but I did laugh plenty of times & I will give the Spindle Cove series another second chance (or is it third at his point?)

Second Chance Saturday (02): Wicked Becomes You by Meredith Duran

Second Chance Saturday
The goal of this feature is to give a second chance to a book/author/series I have written off for some reason.

This Month's Featured Book: Wicked Becomes You by Meredith Duran
This Book Was a Second Chance Because... I read one of Meredith Duran's first books back in 2009, but I wasn't a fan. Since then, I've avoided her books. After seeing several interesting looking ones, I finally convinced myself to pick up this one.
Verdict: Worth it! A great story with dynamic characters, an intriguing plot that didn't overshadow the romance, occasional wry humor, and great relationship development.

This Month's Featured Book: Exclusively Yours by Shannon Stacey
This Book Was a Second Chance Because... I had picked it up from the library numerous times, both before and after I discovered how amazing Shannon Stacey was. I finally cracked it open one day while waiting on a friend so I could start the next episode of Doctor Who, and I was hooked!
Verdict: Worth the second chance! Although I did not like it as much in the other two in the trilogy, it was a very enjoyable story. Any time the Kowalski clan is there, I'm in!
